The World’s First Atheist Orphanage Has Launched a Crowdfunding Campaign
Written by ZOLTAN ISTVAN | February 24, 2015

Zoltan Istvan is a futurist, author of The Transhumanist Wager, and founder of and presidential candidate for the Transhumanist Party. He writes an occasional column for Motherboard in which he ruminates on the future beyond natural human ability.

BiZoHa Orphanage, which bills itself as “the world’s first atheist orphanage,” has launched a crowdfunding campaign. Its aim is to build a deliberately godless safe haven for homeless children in Kasese, Uganda. The proposed orphanage will offer refuge to children, most of whom have lost their parents to AIDS, and will become part of the broader science-based Kasese Humanist Primary School (KHPS).

A Better Life for Humanists in Uganda
Raising funds to assist Ugandan Humanist Masereka Solomon to continue his Humanist work.

“My name is Melissa McAllister and I started this fundraiser to help my friend in Uganda with expenses so that he can continue with his volunteer work. He is currently volunteering at the Kasese Humanist Primary School, but he plans to also assist in the education of other students at nearby schools and the rest of the surrounding communities on important issues that they all face on a daily basis.”

Posted 29 October 2014 | All Out Equality Everywhere

An anti-gay wave is sweeping across the globe. Anti-gay groups are getting more attention, gaining more power and raising millions to spread hate and pass anti-gay laws. But they can be stopped.

Will you chip in a small donation before October 31 to fight back and campaign even harder?

You saved his life. Now save his future
Abuja, Nigeria Education (Recommended by Leo Igwe), posted 25 Sept 2014

Mubarak Bala is a Nigerian national who renounced Islam. For that he was beaten, drugged and imprisoned in the secure psychiatric wing of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital by his own family.

A small group of individuals around the world started the #FreeMubarak campaign on Twitter and enlisted the aid of the International Humanist & Ethical Union (IHEU) in order to get him free.

Living Expenses for Daniel Ashley Pierce
Created August 27, 2014 | GoFundMe

When 19-year-old Kennesaw, Georgia native Daniel Pierce came out to his father, step-mother and grandparents this week, they did not take the news well, to say the least. The young man decided to start filming the interaction with his family, which quickly turned verbally abusive and physically violent. The five minute video he shot on his phone and later posted to YouTube has spread wide and far over the last few days, reaching nearly 4 million views.

High Court Challenge II | National School Chaplaincy Program
Posted 26 May 2014 | Williams v. Commonwealth of Australia and Ors

On the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th of May 2014 I returned to the High Court of Australia. My superb legal team presented our argument most powerfully, and the Court’s decision has been reserved.

Within the LNP coalition budget announced on 13 May 2014, in spite of overall cuts to education funding, the top school spending outlay was $245 million to finance the National School Chaplaincy Program (NSCP) across four years to commence in 2015. This brings the total amount expended upon, or committed to the NSCP since 2007 to $670,000,000. A finding in my favour by the High Court would disallow this proposed funding via various sections of the Australian Constitution.

Religious Prisoner Alexander Aan Released from Indonesian Prison

The Jakarta News reported on 31 January that atheist Alexander Aan had been released early from his prison sentence of 2-1/2 years for “inciting religious hostility” for posting on his personal Facebook page that “there is no god.”

According to the article, Aan was released “on license” (probation), which means that he is required to report regularly and frequently to Indonesian authorities for the foreseeable future. He also still remains liable for a Rp 100 million rupiah (US$8,190) fine imposed as part of his sentence.

Atheist Alliance International (AAI) and other human rights groups, however, remain concerned that Alex is still in danger of being lynched by Muslim vigilante groups who believe that the Koran orders them to kill apostates. Several such group leaders in Indonesia publicly called for his death before he was incarcerated, there is no reason to believe that they have changed their minds since his sentencing. It is unknown whether Alex has been able to rejoin his wife and children yet, or whether it is even safe for him to do so. So it remains an open question whether Alex will be able to return to anything close to a normal life in Indonesia, let alone get a job to pay back his fine.

AAI has been engaged with local and civil Indonesian authorities since Alex’ arrest in 2010 to protect Alex’ rights and secure him a fair trial, as well as to challenge the constitutionality of Article 28(2) of the Electronic Information and Transaction Law and Criminal Code articles 156a(a) and 156a(b), both of which were used to prosecute Alex and both of which are in direct violation of Articles 18 and 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, of which Indonesia is a signatory.

AAI also continues to work to provide Alex with a transition back to a normal life. You can support Alex by contributing to the Legal Fund and ScholarshipFund that AAI has set up for Alex.

Thank you for your support and assistance in helping AAI fight for the rights of atheists around the world.

Make a donation via Progressive Atheists Inc.:

The Progressive Atheists Inc. are currently collecting donations to give 50/50 to the scholarship fund and the lawyers fees fund for Alexander Aan – if you would like to make a donation via Progressive Atheists Inc. please give cash at a local MeetUp or deposit into our bank account with the reference ‘Alexander Aan’.

24 months to save the world
Posted 28th December 2013

Scientist Julienne Stroeve has studied Arctic ice for decades. Every summer she travels north to measure how much ice has melted. She knows that climate change is melting the ice fast, but a recent trip surprised even her. Vast areas of Arctic ice have disappeared, beyond our worst expectations.

This is what the experts warned us about. As the earth warms, it creates many “tipping points” that accelerate the warming out of control. Warming thaws the Arctic sea ice, destroying the giant white ‘mirror’ that reflects heat back into space, which massively heats up the ocean, and melts more ice, and so on. We spin out of control. In 2013 everything — storms, temperatures — was off the charts.

WHERE DOES THE FOOD GO

OzHarvest provides food to over 260 charities across Sydney and Wollongong,55 in Newcastle, 47 in Adelaide and 22 in Brisbane. These charities provide support to many individuals in need, including:

  • children and youth at risk who may have been abused or have nowhere else to go
  • single parents with no support
  • older men and women who have trouble making ends meet
  • those who are homeless
  • marginalised indigenous men, women and children
  • refugees looking for a better life
  • those who are going through drug and alcohol rehabilitation
  • women who are escaping domestic violence; and
  • families with low incomes who need help to get by

The only common feature across these charities is that they all support those who are vulnerable. We provide food to the larger well known organisations like Mission Australia, the PCYC’s, the Salvation Army and Youth off the Streets.

Equally we provide food to many small agencies dotted around Sydney – the type of charity that doesn’t seek publicity. For example, a small women’s refuge that doesn’t advertise so that its details do not become widely known or a small respite centre for children and teenagers escaping difficult home situations.

BRING CAMP QUEST TO AUSTRALIA. HELP ME ACHIEVE THIS GOAL
By Ben Kilby, posted 3rd December 2013

Help me to gain experience and understanding of Camp Quest by attending the U.S. camp.

SPONSOR A FLIGHT TO CAMP QUEST

My goal is to bring Camp Quest to Australia. Camp Quest provides children aged 8-17 with a fun and educational summer camp experience. The camps promotes critical thinking and humanist philosophies.

To be able to start a Camp Quest in Australia, I must gain first hand experience in volunteering at an already established Camp Quest camp. I am asking for donations to help me fly from Australia to the U.S.A. to volunteer at a Camp Quest camp in 2014, so that I will be able to experience and study the ins and outs of running a camp, and bring this structure to Australia in the future.
