Capital punishment in global decline
SMH, Daniel Flitton, Senior Correspondent, 10 April 2013
Iran may have executed four people accused of ”enmity against God and corruption on earth” but worldwide rates of capital punishment are dwindling, a global survey has found.
The report by human rights group Amnesty International shows countries in Asia have more willingly imposed the death penalty in the past year, with China thought to execute more prisoners than the rest of the world combined.
Chinese authorities regard the total number of people put to death as a state secret and Amnesty has stopped trying to estimate it.
