Greens to make history in NSW
Sydney Morning Herald, 7 April 2013
Australia will have its first Muslim woman in any parliament when academic Mehreen Faruqi replaces NSW upper house MP Cate Faehrmann this year, the NSW Greens say.
Ms Faehrmann is resigning from NSW politics in June to run for a seat in the Senate.
Dr Faruqi was preselected by the Greens in a postal ballot from among a field of seven women-only candidates, in another first for the party.
The move makes Dr Faruqi the first Muslim woman appointed to any parliament in Australia, the party said.
“Mehreen’s Pakistani heritage not only breaks new ground for the Greens but it breaks new grounds for politics in NSW, and indeed the whole country,” Ms Faehrmann said in a statement on Sunday.
OFFSHORE CENTRES MUST BE CLOSED AS ASYLUM POLICY CONTINUES TO HARM
Australian Greens Media Release, 5th April 2013
Criticism of the Manus Island detention centre from a member of the government’s own expert panel on asylum seekers shows that Labor’s unravelling Pacific Solution needs to be shut down immediately and children and families need to be brought to the mainland.
“Labor’s policy of offshore detention is hanging in tatters and it’s clear that these island prisons need to be shut down,” the Greens immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
