COIN is a volunteer not-for-profit community group constituted at a meeting in Parliament House, Melbourne, on 9 February 2012. Its members and supporters include a variety of people and organizations that have been active in the area of Catholic Clergy sexual abuse of children and vulnerable adults for many years, including victims and their families, victim support groups, former clergy members, lawyers, psychologists, politicians, students and other concerned members of the community.

COIN’s aims and objectives are to:

  1. Advocate for policy and legal reform for victims seeking justice due to suffering child sexual abuse in the context of religious and other institutions in Australia;
  2. Contribute to, monitor, review and comment upon:
    • the activities and recommendations of Australian inquiries recently completed or currently being pursued, in particular the Commonwealth Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and the 2013 Victorian Parliamentary Committee Inquiry into the handling of child abuse by religious and other organisations; and
    • the response of governments and institutions to those activities and recommendations;
  3. Inform COIN’s membership, and the community, of issues related to the above inquiries and the sexual abuse of children generally;
  4. Pursue further programs and legislative reforms supportive of and related to the above objectives, eg, liaise with government agencies, community groups and private institutions; engage in public education in this area; participate in community debate; publish material on line and elsewhere, etc.
  5. Pursue other related activities as may be appropriate.
